Particle damper is the shock absorber which is based on particle damping technology. Itsprinciple is: fill a certain quality or a certain proportion particles in the cavity of structure,andreduce the amplitude of objective system through the friction, collision and other interactionamong the particles to consume energy. In this process of cutting, cutting tool will vibratewhich can affect the quality of the work pieces,so the particles damper can be installed in thecutter to composite a damping cutting tool.. The outstanding advantages of particle dampertechnology is: it needn’t change the quality and structure of the original system basically; itsdamping effect is very obvious; it can also play good damping effect in bad environment; andjust install the damper in the bar of cutter can give full play to the advantages of particledamper.This paper firstly introduces the development history and current situation of the shockabsorber and focuses on the development of particle damping technology, then furtherillustrates the reason why research the particle damping technology and research the value ofit. It also designs the sizes of damper and cutter bar and checks its strength. And then basedon comparatively perfect Discrete Element Method complete the modeling of the interparticle contact. During modeling, consider the impact of adhesion force among particles onapplied force and determine the contact time step by using the Rayleigh method to improvethe accuracy of the results. By ABAQUS, simulate the collision between two balls. Thenanalyze the collision simulation respectively from the diameter, velocity, density, and elasticand plastic modulus of particle. Through the analysis image data, get the cause of thedifference between the results obtained by simulation. Finally, using test methods to checkthe damping effect of built-in damper internally, analyze the change situation of damping ratio in hammering test and cutting force in cutting test, and provide basis for furthertheoretical study of particle damping technology and particle damper as well as forapplication in practical engineering.
