Most previous studies based on physiological and psychological characteristics of the elderly.This paper studies public space from a new viewpoint that the elderly public health.Research on the relationship between public health and urban design abroad mainly from relationship between landscape design and urban design.The active design guidelines which made by American in2010is a programmatic document.The guidelines proposes that five " D " variables are the key to analysis the relationship between public health and urban design.For the health needs of the elderly in China,this paper proposes new five "D" variables which are density,diversity,the pedestrian space design,destination accessibility and damage reduction.Explore the design principles and strategies,and propose suggestions for improvement of the studied communities.The main contents of new five "D" variables are as the following:Density reflects the relationship between the distribution of the parks in community and the BMI of the elderly.Diversity reflects how community meets the needs of the elderly such as entertainment, culture, and shopping.The pedestrian space design reflects the road systems adaptive degree of special physical function and psychological characteristics of the elderly.Destination reflects accessibility from residential to community public space of the elderly,and whether the facilities are suitable for the elderly.Damage reduction reflects whether urban design reducing the degree of accidental incident or unconscious behavior for the elderly.
