The rotational parts in machine tool most belong to the multi-species, single and small batch production such as spindle, positioning sleeve and gear which are key parts. The structure and process of these parts have a high similarity. There are some problems in the traditional process design of the rotational parts, such as the repeatability of the process design’s work, the diversity of similar parts’ process and the standardization of process data management. In the view of the above problem, the group technology is applied to the processing of the rotational parts. The main research contents are as follows:First, the coding system KFCS is developed which match the rotational parts’ characteristics of this company. The structure of the coding system is determined by studying the advantages and disadvantages of the existing coding system such as OPTIZ, KK-3 and JLBM-1. The code value is formed by statistical summary of the parts’ characteristics in each code bit.Parts grouping method is studied secondly. The existing grouping method confined to the engineer prior knowledge. The classification result may be not the same because of different engineer’s process design basis and different understanding on the parts processing equipment. In this paper, a recent research about clustering algorithm is used to solve the parts grouping problem. The clustering algorithm can make parts into different group based on the similarity of the parts’ code. K-means algorithm which is more commonly used is selected in this paper. The implementation of the algorithm relies on clustering function of MATLAB toolbox. The problem of new parts grouping is solved by BP network algorithm which is implemented by MATLAB toolbox. The work of parts grouping is solved by the above means which does not depend on the experience of engineer.The design method of group processing is discussed at last. The composite method is used to design each part family’s composite parts. The process planning method, the process route and the process specification are formulated on the composite parts. To forecast the surface roughness on the key process, and the whole process design is achieved on rotational parts which has a high similarity on shape and processing.The paper goes further for the parts’ feature and the process database which is structured by ACCESS, and the database is developed by VBA. The logic relation of each module and interface and other relevant function are created. The process output system which is based on group technology is initially built.
