ABSTRACT:The buried corrugated steel bridges and culverts have widely applied due to its good mechanical performance. Currently, the buried corrugated steel culverts have been developed to the long-span structures by foreign researchers, while the research and application on the corrugated steel bridges and culverts, which started lately in our country, are mainly concentrating on the short-span pipe culverts. Therefore, the study on the long-span buried corrugated steel culverts is very necessary.Firstly, the field test on pipe culverts with the diameter of4m and6m was carried out; according to the test results, the mechanical performance of the buried corrugated steel structure with increased span was analyzed. The result shows that the construction process has a more obvious influence on the deformation and stress of the pipe culvert with6m diameter than the one with4m diameter. Secondly, according to the outstanding problem of the stability in the construction process, the most instability condition of the structure in the construction process was analyzed;some feasible improvement measures were taken and the effect of different measures on the structural stability in the construction process were analyzed and compared; different measures based on the overstressing on local part of the long-span pipe culvert were employed and their advantages and disadvantages were compared. Finally, the characteristics of traditional open spandrel arch bridge were summaried and based these, the number of the abdominal holes are increased on the long-span open cross-sectional corrugated steel circular arch bridges with the minimum thickness of backfill; their mechanical performance was analyzed and parameters were optimized; after that, the advantages, disadvantages and application of the new bridge type were proposed. Besides, through the discussion and analysis, some reasonable suggestions on the strengthening measures for the long-span corrugated steel arch bridges with traditional open cross-sectional high and low arc were given.
