At present, Chinese traditional culture drifts away gradually, city is like a huge factory, and buildings are produced in batches at a fast speed on the ―assembly line‖. Jiangnan with water and pretty image, Lingnan with winding mountains, and Bashu with magnificent and quiet landscape are occupied by modern architectures with exactly the same styles. As a result of environmental neglect and cultural collapse, cities are expanded day by day, human living environment is threatened, and the ancient civilization is eroded. A group of architects realize that the Westernized path of cultural development has already come to an end. The new generation of architects represented by Wang Shu revitalized an ancient building type – literati building by referring to traditional culture and inheriting the modern form.Literati garden of ancient China is the precedent of literati building, and the garden builders are both literati and painters. Therefore, the painting theory is equal to garden theory. As an expression for spatial sight in landscape paintings, "three-depth" concept is especially outstanding in literati garden, and this concept is continued and inherited in contemporary literati buildings. By starting from "three-depth" concept, this paper collects information about representative literati buildings and their architects at present. Firstly, theoretical and practical discussions are made for discovery and development of literati buildings via document analysis method, comparative study method and logical reasoning method by combining with the investigation. Secondly, the spatial feature and spatial sight reflected by "three-depth" concept are studied. Meanwhile, spatial feature and spatial sight reflected by "three-depth" concept are graded by applying the three levels of artistic conception proposed by Wang Changling – content conception, artistic conception and passion conception, which has laid a research foundation for this paper. Thirdly, literati building works of three architects that represent different inheritance modes of traditional culture are selected, and the creation methods are summarized from "three-depth" artistic conception reflected by base environment and internal &external spaces. Then, association is established for the levels of artistic conception and three dimensions of spatial awareness, and it is transformed into modern language. The methods of creating "three-depth" spatial sight are summarized in detail from visual dimension, experience dimension and spirit dimension. Finally, taking the author’s practical case as the counterevidence of the acquired results in the end.Revival of literati building is only one branch taken by contemporary Chinese architects on the road of exploring buildings with Chinese characteristics. Study of its influence on inheritance of traditional culture and modern transformation aims to provide references for architects on this exploration road. In this way, we will be able to see more architecture works with cultural self-consciousness and Chinese characteristics in our future cities.
