Gas film seal is a new kind of advanced rotary shaft seal. It is usually used to seal gas medium in rotating machinery. Compared with other sealing methods, it has the advantages of little leakage, little abrasion, long service life, low energy consumption, easy operation and reliable. Cylindrical gas seal is proposed to applicate on the key sealing parts of aviation gas turbine.The main content of this paper is to research the structure and performance of cylindrical gas seal.First of all, the research status and significance of gas seal are introduced. The leakage of gas seal is far less than the mechanical seal. The successful application of gas seal has great economic and military value.Secondly, the basic theory and structures of cylindrical gas seal are introduced, and sets up the control equation. In order to solve it, the equation is simplified.Thirdly, the common methods for solving Reynolds equation are compared, finally the finite element method is chose to solve the Reynolds equation, and the basic process of the finite element method is introduced. The program is verified by an example. Using the program analyzed the influence of operation parameters and geometric parameters on sealing performance of cylinder gas seal, draw the relevant curve, and the reasons of those changes are analyzed.Finally, the basic optimizing theory is introduced, in order to get better sealing performance. The optimum design program of cylindrical gas seal face geometry parameters were make. Combined coordinate rotation method with interval decreasing method, the geometric parameters of the cylindrical gas seal was optimized. The sealing performance before optimization is compared with the performance after optimization, sealing performance is improved significantly.
