The Significance Of Traditional Architecture Space In Southeastern Fujian

Now the research about Fujian traditional dwellings is more concentrated in traditional Hakka Earth Building of western Fujian,Red Brick House of southern Fujian and the Official Architecture of eastern Fujian, but there are a lot of large-scale collective houses in the mountain of Southeastern Fujian almost not to be mentioned. The author as a member of the family group has a childhood in the collective houses, choosing Xiaxi House that is well preserved for the research which is based on the daily life and collective memory in the house, hoping to interpret the real significance of the space in Xiaxi house more comprehensively.This paper attempts to hold an internal vision to explore the meaning both in practical and spiritual level. The real existent architectural space was relatively fixed, while the daily habits and the ritual activities made a different interpretation to the space, there was a very close dependent relationship between behavior and space.The traditional dwelling was affected by history, culture, custom, fengshui, etc, so the paper started from the perspective of culture and society. First of all it used people as the starting point to introduce the history about the Lin family in the Xiaxi house, the following analyzed the influence about the structure of Xiaxi house which was made by fengshui, and in-depth described and interpreted the various parts of the space used in the daily life and ritual activities. There were great changes about social consciousness and living conditions after the reform and opening up, so the last part of the paper discussed the decline and collapse about the collective space of Xiaxi house, and rethought what the positive significance the collective space of traditional dwellings had for living space of today’s high-density community.
