In order to improve the recognizability of ship lights in light pollution area of the sea, the design method of ship lights with a semiconductor laser as light emitting material is proposed.On basis of the principle of semiconductor laser, the advantages of the laser including high energy concentration, high color purity and easy control of the light arc are indicated. It is suitable to use it as a new ship lights light-emitting material and finally an integrated low-power semiconductor laser array is decided to use in designing a new ship lights.In order to make the new ship lights to comply with the provisions of "COLREGS", the new ship lights’ design theory completes in the luminous intensity of lights, arcs range and color attributes according to the principles of photometry and colorimetry.Take starboard and masthead light of greater or equal to the length of 50m powerboat as an example, three-dimensional model of the new ship lights is established in the three-dimensional solid modeling software (lighttools) and the lights in the emission intensity at different reception distance, arcs range and color attributes are simulated. Simulation results show that the new ship lights can meet the "COLREGS" the relevant requirements, and new types of ships lights are easier for the human eyes to identify at light pollution sea waters.In summary, this paper analyzes and discusses the feasibility of a semiconductor laser as a light emitting material design of new ships of lights. The design of the new ship lights from the luminous intensity, range and color attributes arcs is complete. A three-dimensional model of part of the ship’s lights is established under the circumstance of Lighttool software and achievements on simulation are obtained. It proves that the new ship lights are more easily identified by human eyes at the light pollution area of sea.
