Aiming at the imbalance of regional development, some university of Northwest Territories is facing the issues of outdated teaching experiment equipment, lack of laboratory equipment and innovative experiment on educational practices. In this paper, the rapid development of EDA technology and wide application of virtual instrument technology as a starting point, and regarding the real function signal generator of Electronic Technology Laboratory as the model; A design of new signal generator system have been proposed, which taking FPGA minimum system, peripheral D/A conversion circuit and waveform modulating circuit as slave computer system and taking LabVIEW development platform as host computer system.The host computer accomplishes the functions including: the output waveform selection of formulas waveform, sine waveform, triangle waveform, square waveform and arbitrary painted waveform, and the control and regulation of output waveform parameters. All the control command from host computer system and the waveform data are receiving and collecting by slave computer system through the serial port. Then in the FPGA DDS module generates a corresponding digital output waveform. At last, through the D/A conversion circuit and waveform modulating circuit, the digital output waveform is transmitted into analog waveform, and the analog waveform is modulating into the final output waveform. This design meet the free choice of the output waveform, realizes the regulation of frequency of the output waveform from 1Hz to 20 MHz, the amplitude from 0.1V to 5V and the bias function of the output waveform.This design takes advantage of the direct digital frequency synthesis(DDS) technology, making the entire system with a high frequency resolution of the output waveform, continuous phase when switching frequency, low phase noise output and full digital features. At the same time, the system has advantages of the user-friendly, reliable performance, real-time outputting and good readability. This paper provides an idea and method for research and development of new instrument, has some innovations in teaching simulation equipment and enriches the teaching experiment.
