In view of current situation of power grid reactive compensation, a reactive power compensation controller is designed for low voltage distribution network. This thesis introduces the basic concepts of reactive power and the basic working principles of reactive power compensator, analyzes the negative impacts on the electricity grid reactive power and the necessity for reactive power compensation. The reactive power compensation controller is based on an 8-bit microcontroller STC90C54RD+ as its core. Analog switch is combined with voltage-to-frequency chip to handle multiple signals by time sharing processing, which reduces the resource requirements for CPU and other peripherals, hardware costs.By comparing the target signal pulses per unit time with the pulse number of reference voltage(2.5V), it can get the signal voltage to be measured. By measuring the zero-crossing intervals of voltage and current, it can calculate the phase angle and power factor. At the same time, it can improve the accuracy and reduce the total operations. By designing the new composite switches, which combine the controllable silicon and magnetic latching relays, it can control the switching of capacitors, avoiding the current impact, and make it more reliable. In considering "var competition" problem exists in the multiple controller network, it increased the function of the intelligent network deployment in the communication module. When master controller fails, the other controllers can compete each other to generate a master controller as a coordinator to make the system more stable, and more intelligent. This low-voltage reactive power compensation controller has been debugged and tested of its function, which verify the feasibility of the design.
