In term of the actuality of var compensation in power system and the disadvantages of the existing high-voltage var compensation equipments, the paper presents the design of a new kind of high-voltage intelligent var compensation controller applying to the 10KV distribution network. The basic concept of the reactive power and the essential principle of var compensation are reviewed and the modes, the capability and the economic and technical benefits of var compensation are analyzed.The controller uses the 16-bit flash-based MSP430F149 MCU and a new kind of algorithm to measure phase angle in power system. The power factor, active and . reactive power are calculated using the new algorithm. On the basis of analyzing different kinds of control strategies of var compensation, the paper applies the criterion of voltage and var to control switching and illustrates a improved mode of switching capacitor which can prevent the switched-capacitor from the impacting of instantaneous rush currents by means of zero-crossing triggering of SCR components, and can realize auto-tracking var and auto-switching Shunt Capacitor Bank. Initial operating parameters are stored in information flash memory of the MCU using flash self-programming technique in order to decrease complexity of the circuit and improve stability. Both wire and wireless communication methods are used to realize communication between controller and operator. The paper also illustrates some practical hardware and software reliability measures.The high-voltage intelligent var compensation controller described in the paper has already tested by experiments.
