At present, the general arrangements of the pure electric buses in Chinese market are almost refitted on the basis of the diesel buses. The front overhangs, wheelbases and rear overhangs of longitudinal dimensions of the pure electric buses are close to the corresponding parameters of the diesel buses. It brings about a problem that the rear overhangs of pure electric buses are too long. The general arrangement of pure electric bus has its own characteristics rather than copy the general arrangement of diesel bus. The rear overhang of pure electric bus can be shortened and the general arrangement of short rear overhang must be short, which will alleviate the bottleneck of pure electric bus. The long wheelbase and short rear overhang general arrangement provides a new way of thinking for pure electric bus design and it is in line with the characteristics of pure electric bus.The paper analyzed the general arrangement of diesel buses and electric buses, and then proposed long wheelbase and short overhang arrangement for pure electric bus. During the short overhang pure electric bus operated in Shenzhen, we tested its passenger capacity, energy economy and body roll angle. We chose a 10.7 meters short rear overhang pure electric bus and two 12 meters pure electric buses as test targets and developed the test program of their passenger capacity, energy economy and body roll angle. Firstly, the passenger capacity of three pure electric buses test analysis showed that passenger capacity of the 10.7 meters short rear overhang pure electric bus was similar to the two 12 meters pure electric buses when a pure electric bus in the shorter overhang and length. Secondly, the paper presented one hundred kilometers energy consumption per person index which can evaluate pure electric buses’ energy economy more accurately. One hundred kilometers energy consumption per person of the three pure electric buses showed that general arrangement of pure electric bus with short rear overhang helped to improve the energy economy. The body roll angle test analysis of short rear overhang pure electric bus showed that the battery concentrated in the rear overhang didn’t lead too large degree roll. The paper put forward the solutions which are lightweight body design and to reduce the weight of battery appropriately against the problem which the curb weight of short rear overhang pure electric bus was too heavy. The paper also proposed forced air cooling solution against the problem that the battery of short rear overhang pure electric bus was difficult to dissipate heat.
