Since 1988,expressway construction has began in our country,expressway has made great contribution to our country’s rapid development of social and economy.2013, China’s expressway mileage has reached 104400 kilometers, and the expressway network has covered most provinces in our country,it has became the important link of China’s transportation and socio-economic development, expressway network structure gradually formed. Expressway by its unique technical and economic advantages, won the majority of traffic travelers loving, at the same time, the rapid development of the automotive industry made the rapid growth of China’s expressway traffic demand, some sections of the expressway network capacity can not meet existing demand, particularly evident during the holidays, Thus affecting the efficiency of the whole expressway network, in order to ensure that the expressway is convenient, efficient and safe operation, the paper embarks from the expressway network as a whole, research the expressway network capacity and improving methods. The main contents are as follows:First, the paper based on the existing road network capacity theory, cards the road network capacity categorization, according to different principle of classification divides into different types, and according to the goals of this paper proposes the concept of expressway network capacity, and defines the main contents of this thesis. Then according to the characteristics of the expressway, conducts a comprehensive analysis on the key affecting factors of the expressway network capacity.Secondly, the paper based on previous research scholar’s Road Network Capacity modeling approach, and based on the characteristics of the expressway network, improves the road network capacity model and its calculation methods,and constructs a suitable expressway network capacity model and calculation methods, then determines the correction coefficient of expressway network capacity.Again, according to Shaanxi Provincial expressway network infrastructure and traffic flow data, uses the space and time consuming method, calculates and analyzes Shaanxi Province expressway network capacity, and compares with the traffic flows of free passage period on holidays, analyzes expressway traffic supply and demand conditions of Shaanxi Province on current expressway network size.Finally, from the viewpoint of traffic control puts forward four key methods to improve the expressway network capacity, mainly includes the key node expressway network capacity upgrade method, the expressway traffic control and guidance system methods, the expressway mainline variable speed limit and control methods and the expressway on-ramp control methods, then analyzes the principles and methods of application of each method in detail, in order to ensure stability of traffic flows in the expressway network, reduce congestion events, improve expressway’s utilization as much as possible, So as to achieve the purpose of improving the expressway network capacity.
