The cooling pump of engine is an important component of the cooling system, the performance of the pump will largely affect the quality of the engine operating conditions even the longevity. While the electric control technology has been applied in the automotive industry depth to depth, which makes the decoupling of the electric cooling pump and the engine has been achieved. Electric cooling pump is no longer to be restricted by the regulation of the engine speed, but mainly adjust based on the heat load on the engine. This will not only speed up the warm-up, but also makes the engine operates at the best thermal load state. In addition, when the engine stops operating, electric cooling pump will continue to run for a while to avoid the local overheating, which will make damage to the engine.In this paper, the electric cooling pump of the cooling system of BMW 520 Li engine has been studied. 3D modeling, numerical simulation and experimental verification of the combination has been used as research methods. The main work is follows:1. Based on the theoretical basis of centrifugal pumps, the structure and working principle of the automotive electric cooling pump should be understand. And comparing with the traditional cooling pumps, analysis the improvement bring by the electric cooling pump of vehicle.2. To use design tool CFturbo of the pump and rotating machinery, use the combining method of field measurements, theoretical knowledge and design with experience to complete the collection of shape characteristics and designed parameters,and establish a three-dimensional model of the electric cooling pump. By using CFD(computational fluid dynamics) and fluid analysis software PumpLinx, to make numerical simulation numerical simulation of electric cooling pump, and analysis whether the flow field distribution is reasonable, and draws its universal characteristic curve.3. We establish a simple water system. The simulation data has be handled well with the electric cooling pump control panel, we have completed the electric cooling pump control and characterization together.The results of the experiment shows: Results of numerical simulation and experimentalresults obtained was similar and consistent change in the overall trend on the pump head;because of the different simulation and experiment measure has different meaning of the power, so adjust the value of the motor efficiency as much as possible to make the two are similar or identical data. And from which we get the characteristics curve of flow quality,power, flow speed, so the correction is needed just based on the motor efficiency. In this paper,the methods of the three-dimensional modeling on the electric cooling pump, flow field numerical simulation and analysis, has some reference and reference value on the same type of engine cooling pump or the cooling pump in the theory and application.
