With the acceleration of national urbanization, the scale of the large and medium-sized cities has gradually expanded and the demand for public transport has also increased. With the diversified development of public transportation, people are putting forward higher and higher requirements in the bus service quality. In order to improve their own competitiveness, the bus companies are constantly devoted to improving the bus performance from all aspects. As an important component of automobile transmission system, the transmission has a great impact on the vehicle’s power, economy and comfort performance. MT(Mechanical Transmission) with its high drive efficiency, low cost, mature production technology and other features, is still the mainstream product of the city bus transmissions. But MT buses exist some shortcomings such as shifting difficulties and power interruption. Besides, the driver’s professional level has great influence on MT vehicle performance. As the growth of the bus lines mileage, the driver’s labor intensity continues to increase and bus companies are often faced with difficulties in recruiting suitable driver problems. AT(Automatic Transmission) with its easy operation, mature technology and high reliability advantages has been increasingly widespread on the buses. At present, Xi’an buses mainly use AT and MT two products. AT and MT transmissions have their own advantages, but what kind of transmission is more suited to Xi’an public transportation operating environment, there is no related systematic research. This paper has selected Xi’an 400 Road AT and MT buses for the study, carried out the investigations during the actual operation process, compared two buses’ operational characteristics from vehicle technology speed and standard deviation of vehicle technology speed of each station and analyzed the actual driving conditions of 400 Road bus; respectively conducted proving ground gas consumption test and actual operating gas consumption test for AT and MT transmission bus of 400 Road, proposed hundred passenger-kilometers gas consumption as evaluation index of the bus fuel consumption, modified and calculated the test data and then compared the fuel economy of the two types of buses; conducted the labor-intensive test of the MT bus drivers, analyzed the shifting mode and studied the labor intensity of the drivers’ left leg and right arm; respectively carried out vehicle ride comfort test for AT and MT transmission bus of 400 Road and compared ride comfort of the two kinds of transmission buses from root mean square of weighed acceleration and jerk two aspects. This paper conducted a relatively systematic test for AT and MT transmission buses from above aspects and studied the applicability of AT transmission and MT transmission in Xi’an buses, providing important reference for Xi’an bus transmission selection.
