Relay protection devices have always been important technical measures of the safe and stable operation of power grid, but they cannot completely adapt to the needs of the development of power grid any more with the continuous expansion of power grid interconnection and its increasingly complicated structure. Wide area protection system can collect network running status information of each part, to overall control the power grid. It can take effective measures in power grid failure, to avoid power grid blackout accidents because of the grid cascading failure. The thesis studied deeply the main communication technology and communication needs in the wide area protection system. Built the OPNET network simulation model and its real time performance was verified. The main symmetric encryption algorithm and asymmetric encryption algorithm was compared and analyzed, and the AES encryption algorithm and the ECC encryption algorithm was simulated. Then, an encryption scheme, which can be applied to the wide area protection system, was finally presented.Firstly, this thesis analyzed the main functions of wide area protection system, designed the structure diagram of the wide area protection system, and determined the main needs of the wide area protection system and the main communication technologies applied in it. To satisfy the communication needs of wide area protection system, the thesis select the optical fiber as its communication medium, and the IP over SDH over MPLS as its communication mode.Secondly, this thesis built the communication delay model of wide area protection system, and the influence factors and specific features of the communication latency was analyzed. This thesis also built the network simulation model of wide area protection system with the software OPNET, set up a substation LAN and dispatching center LAN, defined the communication packet format of wide area protection system, set the priority of the date transmission, and MPLS technology was applied to the communication model of wide area protection system. The performance characteristics in the aspect of communication was analyzed and its realtime quality was verified through the simulation analysis in the wide area protection system model.Thirdly, to satisfy the security needs of the communication in wide area protection system, this thesis analyzed the main data communication security technologies applied in the wide area protection system. The symmetric encryption algorithms such as DES and AES encryption algorithm were compared and analyzed, and the AES encryption algorithm were simulated finally. The asymmetric encryption algorithms such as RSA encryption algorithm and ECC encryption algorithm were compared and analyzed, and the ECC encryption algorithm were realized finally. The information security strategy of wide area protection system was developed, a new encryption scheme applied to wide area protection system was presented.
