Reinforced concrete column strengthening with externally bonded steel frame is widely used as a traditional reinforcement method, and still widely spreading used in the reinforcement field. This method has the advantages for its convenient construction, less changes of section dimension of the member, less increment of weight, cutler workload in spot. It is a reliable reinforcement technology, and it can greatly improve the original RC column’s bearing capacity and aseismic capacity. So theoretical and experimental study on RC column strengthening with externally bonded steel frame is a scientific problem with practical use and academic value.As the rapid development of nonlinear finite element method, finite element method applied to scientific research as the supplement of experiments is feasible and necessary. So far, the study of reinforced concrete column strengthening with externally bonded steel frame mainly use experiment and finite element analysis. But until now, few related reports and research have been found by using nonlinear finite element method to solve the problem of the lateral resistant capacity of reinforced concrete column strengthening with externally bonded steel frame. In this paper, the finite element software ABAQUS is used to make the research in these aspects. The main contents of this paper are as follows.(1)Described the mechanism of strengthen column with externally bonded steel frame and the material constitutive equation. According to the characteristics of the strengthen column with externally bonded steel frame, proposed a new concrete uniaxial constitutive equation.(2)Introduces the method of structure modeling and modeling parameters selection. Described the solid element method modeling and the fiber section method modeling of RC column strengthening with externally bonded steel frame. Then verifying the analysis results with the experiments’ and putting forward a suitable whole level modeling method of the RC column strengthening with externally bonded steel frame;(3) Through the parameter analysis of the RC column strengthening with externally bonded steel frame, the parameters: dimension of angle iron, strength of angle iron, batten spacing, initial loading the axial compression ratio and other are analyzed. Finally get the influence of each parameter on the lateral capacity of RC column strengthening with externally bonded steel frame, and to evaluate the results of the analysis.Through the above research we can clearly understand the influence of each parameter on the lateral capacity of RC column strengthening with externally bonded steel frame. The analysis results can provide reference for engineering practice. A new concrete uniaxial constitutive equation and the fiber section modeling method are proposed according to the characteristics of the strengthen column with externally bonded steel frame which can provide a new way for the analysis of overall structure.
