As a kind of building envelope, glass curtain wall has become popular with a lot of building designer in recent years. Glass curtain wall can significantly improve not only the aesthetics of building facade but also the pure and transparent architectural art. However, this building envelope of glass curtain wall are very different from the traditional building envelope in the aspects of pyrology and photology, of which the most important problem is the large energy consumption. Therefore, the thesis focuses on the public buildings using glass curtain wall in Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province, deeply research its thermal performance and then proposes a solution based on the research. The study results of the thesis may help to reduce the energy consumption of the buildings with the envelope of glass curtain wall.Based on the structure of glass curtain wall, the energy consumption of each components of glass curtain wall are firstly analyzed, and obtain the energy-efficient materials and construction of glass curtain wall. Through a case study, the field tests of the terminal in Xi’an Xianyang airport, the test results and thermal environment analysis of the case are obtained. Then, the factors impacting on the change of energy consumption of buildings, such as glass type, shade type and geographical location, are further studied by using the software DeST with the architectural model of the airport terminal. The glass type of glass curtain wall suitable for xian area is discussed from both energy saving and cost. Finally, the specific methods are finded through the case analysis for reducing the energy consumption of glass curtain wall in Xi ’an region.The results show that the glass type is one of the major factors on the energy consumption of glass curtain wall, and the hollow glasses, low-e glass, is a good choice for the requirement of the different cooling and heating load in xi ’an region, which significantly reducing the energy consumption of buildings. Moreover, the size and orientation of glass curtain wall and shade are also the factors determining buildings energy consumption. Hence, during the design of building glass curtain wall, the factors such as glass materials, shading scheme, building orientation and curtain wall area, should be considered together in order to effective reduction of the building energy consumption.At the end of the thesis, a detailed introduction is given for how to design glass curtain wall by the effective energy saving. For the ratio of window and wall areas over the limit of 0.7 specified in the "design standard for energy efficiency of public buildings", the limit value of heat transfer coefficient and shading coefficient is solved by a simple balance method. It may help to parameter selection for the curtain wall design of buildings, such as airport terminal, convention center and art center.
