Power transmission lines are usually deployed in wide, long-distance and varied topography. Superhigh vehicles driving under, or superhigh machines working nearby may break or short-circuit the power lines. Furthermore, serious economic loss and security threat will be caused by the power cut. Since the external damage happens often, covertly and unexpectedly, daily patrols by the power supply department are not sufficient and effective in management. To protect the power lines from being damaged externally, this thesis designed and developed a external damage precaution system for power lines to reduce external damage events even eliminate them so that safe operation and smart management of the power lines can be improved. The thesis is organized as follows:â‘ Overall design: The distance measurement is separated from the alarm to reduce the volume, weight and power consumption. These two modules are connected through a short-distance wireless link. The overall structure and scheme selections of the distance measurer, close and remote wireless transmission are expounded based on system requirements. Data fusion technology and corresponding algorithms are also introduced.â‘¡Hardware design: The main control chip was selected according to system framework. The hardware design principles and realization of online distance measurer, local alarm terminal, close and remote communication units were depicted in this section.â‘¢Software design: In the light of system functional features, design principles and flows of online distance measurer, local alarm terminal and back-end precaution platform were introduced.Simulations of the proposed external damage precaution system for power lines, both in function and technical indexes, show that the system has fast response, high efficiency and reliable operation. Hidden damages under or near the power lines can be measured efficiently. Any actions beyond the safe distance can be estimated and alarmed precisely for the back-end precaution platform to capture information of the potential risks.
