With the rapid development of economy, the urban motorization degree is higher and higher, the traffic problem around schools is increasingly outstanding, the shortage of parking spaces and the connection between bus or metro stations and school walking system is imperfect, the traffic organization is not good enough, etc., which cannot guarantee the safety and the convenience of students on their way. It’s a realistic problem that cannot be ignored and urgently to be solved in the city. To alleviate the problem, many elementary schools in the country practice their own measures in front of the school district in rush hour. But the problem cause by the discontinuity and insecurity of the walking way cannot be solve through the management measures of individual elementary sc hool. This article embarks from the practical problems, try to breakthrough from the perspective of urban planning, based on the user behavior pattern, explore the space requirements of different behavior pattern, optimize the design of the general space s trategy, try to build a safety walking way network to elementary schools in a larger scale of urban space.The article absorbs the experience of foreign country, combing the local specifications related to the way to school, to understand the development of the foreign practice as well as the limitations of local specifications. At the same time, the article also study the domestic researches on traffic around the school, to understand the domestic researches’ breakthrough point and the solution to the problem. On the basis of the reference of general studies abroad, the second chapter clarified the definition, the significance and the function of the “Walking Way to Elementary School”.On the basis of the theoretical research, the third chapter is about the on-the-spot investigation of a few local elementary schools in Guangzhou, including the questionnaire survey of the students and their parents. There are three typical behavior patterns that can be concluded, which is walking on the whole way, walking and taking buses or metro and the last pattern, parents using personal vehicles picking up their children. Together with the present environment of the way to elementary school, and the behavior characteristics of students’ and parents’ to summarize different space requirements on the Walking Way to Elementary School.The fourth chapter of this article combined with the present environment of the way to school and space requirements of different behavior optimize the Walking Way to Elementary School in three level. Firstly, put forward the structural optimization of the systems of the walking way around the school, then followed by the space design proposal of the walking way. Finally, put forward the proposed measures to construct the network system of the walking way to school. This article hopes that through this three levels optimization strategy to improve the traffic problems on the way to elementary school.
