With the continued development of smart grid, data reliable delivery of the traffic flow in control and protection between the dispatch center and substation is increasingly important. That is to say, the reliability and real-time in Power Network has attracted more and more attention which means that it is extremely urgent to deepen the study of the performance of the power dispatch data network. However, the lack of the study of data reliable delivery of the traffic flow between the dispatch center and substation have resulted the shortage of methods and means in analyzing the performance of the power dispatch data network. Considering the factors above, this paper presents a method for modeling and simulating the performance of smart grid based on OPNET. This method provides references for analyzing the smart grid technology and evaluating performance through modeling the traffic flow in control and protection from the automation system in power network and simulating the network performance for quantitative analysis.In the first, this paper analyzed the transmission protocol, transmission services and performance of the traffic flow and so on in the traffic flow in control and protection of power telecontrol system, protection and information system, wide area phasor measurement system, measurement automation system, on-line monitoring system and so on.In the second, this paper studied some data transmission technologies of the power dispatch data network, such as SDH, MPLS, Diff-serv, VPN and so on. What’s more, this paper analyzed the impacts of their traffic flows in control and protection to segregated area, flow distribution, reliability and security in the power dispatch data network. This paper also presents a topological simulating method about the power dispatch data network design used to transmit the traffic flow in control and protection through analyzing principles of it.In the end, this paper presented a method based on OPNET to modeling the network. Using this method, this paper modeled the automatic service system in power network and the traffic flow in control and protection. By this model, this paper stimulated and analyzed the effect of MPLS to performance of network, such as the flow distribution of the traffic flow in control and protection in the power network, end-to-end delay and so on. This paper also analyzed the impact of network self-recovery fault recovered to network communication. The study shows that the need of communication in the power dispatch data network are better satisfied for the better network performance by using MPLS, its relational priority and differentiated services in normal and self-recovery fault recovered situation.
