Locality Expression Of Contemporary Cultural Architecture In Taiwan

The regional expression of architecture is actually a kind of architectural form under the globalization situation as well as a measure to withstand the global culture convergence for current construction. In the 1980 s, the creative wave of renaissance “national form” was launched in mainland China architecture. Taiwan, which has the same culture with mainland China entered the period of comprehensive diversification later in 1990. The issue that the Taiwan architecture faces is that they would like to find their own architectural style which means they do not want to be the same as mainland China architecture and become the way that the western imaged.Although the performance of Taiwanese architects can not be called “regionalism” since the 1990 s, they explored and pursued the “local” exposition quite clearly. The architects during this period started to enter the local to know the realistic society. Facing the realities of local life issues and cultural changes, they looked for the local architecture with “local characteristics” and “humanistic concern” and carried out a series of exploration and practice of contemporary local architecture in Taiwan by conducting different construction experiments and architecture discourse.This paper has carried on the analysis of the current construction in three aspects: the relationship between architecture and nature, the relationship between architecture and human, the relationship between architecture and time. It concludes three regional expressions which are “the coordination of artificial architecture and natural environment”, “local architectural practice under humanism” and “architecture making friends with time” by analyzing the local expression of contemporary culture in Taiwan. Finally, it summarizes the achievements of Taiwan contemporary architecture for nearly 20 years in some aspects such as the exploration about the architecture with topography, climate, ecology, culture, the urban sense, public participation and the identification of local memory, the relationship between construction and environment. The results will have some implications for the mainland China’s regional architectural theory and creation.In order to discuss the development trend of Taiwan regional architecture, this paper considers that it should abandon the discussion-oriented style of architecture history and receive different cultural perspectives. Meanwhile, it also should think of the construction which consists of living, sustainability and cultural value and discuss from the perspective of life.
