Countryside, the source of Chinese traditional culture and a settlement pattern of human life, is the root and gene that propagates and cultivates folk culture. Since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy, there has been rapid economic development and fast promotion of industrialization and urbanization in China.Influenced by urban expansion and rise of township industries, traditional rural space has been occupied and has shrunk increasingly. For the moment, more than 80 natural villages are missing every day. What have been declining and missing are not only villages but also folk cultures[1] like historic evolutions folk customs, legends and stories, rancient architecture heritage celebrities’ biographies, ural regulations and traditional concepts, family trees, traditional technologies and arts, ancient and famous trees, etc. With mighty expansion of urban areas. Inclining of villages has accelerated downfall of culture. In rural construction, inheritance and preservation of folk culture has become a significant issue for the moment. Being shortage of landscape ecological theories and technical guidance, construction of new countryside in China is experiencing a“beautiful movement”. The original local flavor has vanished for good because of rich urban flavor, excessive artifacts and stereotype blind following, and there emerges severe “thousands of villages with same appearance” phenomenon. As the saying goes,”Customs are different area from area, even in a quite short distance”, with the differences of economic base, natural conditions, traditional custom, historical origins and so on, villages existing through a thousand-year sharpening have their own styles, features and dispositions. In landscape design of construction of new countryside, folk cultures of different characteristics shall be protected and inherited with adjust measures to local conditions, changing “thousands of villages with same appearance” into“thousands of villages with a thousand appearances”. Let people have a glance at rivers and lakes and mountains, and have a sense of nostalgia, this is an ideal expectation of us for Chinese villages. This article, taking landscape renovation of new countryside in Guanshan Village,Danfeng County, Shanxi Province as the object of study, from the angle of landscape design, explores how to blend folk culture into Guanshan Village landscape design by means of participating in project transformation and field researches. The writer believes that construction of new countryside is not sheer “countryside beautiful movement” but a an organic rebirth based on respecting and inheriting local history, culture, ecology and social customs which shall be fully protected and inherited during landscape design. Find the optimal bonding point of folk culture inheritance and construction of new countryside and seek for the biggest intersection during the protection and construction. Taking the planning and renovation of Guanshan Village, fully protect traditional residence and yards, local plants, folk culture and so on, and conduct innovation and reconstruction of its cultural landscapes like its topography, street layout and local customs. Make extension of folk culture and rural landscape design supplementary for each other and enjoy mutual development, and form a unique regional style featured by “one village, one style”.
