Chinese mechanical drawing has appeared in Xia and Shang Dynasties. Before Song Dynasty, there is only text narration of the mechanical drawing without one plan in ancient books. This tradition was broke through in the technical works of Song Dynasty and a large number of mechanical plans emerged. Previous studies of mechanical drawing before Song Dynasty mainly focused on the texts of ancient books and sometimes the mechanical Paintings in ancient paintings were used just as the supplement. It is not very perfect to understand the mechanical drawing before the Song Dynasty. The history of mechanical drawing before Song Dynasty needs a comprehensive study of mechanical plans. The mechanical Paintings in ancient chinese paintings were systematically researched from the perspective of mechanical drawing in this article for the first time. At the same time, the mechanical paintings and unearthed similar machines before the Song dynasty were compared and the mechanical paintings and the mechanical plans also were compared. On this basis, the relativity between mechanical paintings and mechanical plans was discussed.This thesis consists of four parts. The first chapter is the mechanical painting and its cartographic technique in Pre-Qin Dynasty. Mainly introducing and analyzing the mechanical paintings described on pottery, rock, bronze, clothing and lacquer in Pre-Qin period, examining the unearthed similar machines during the same period, comparing the unearthed similar machines and the mechanical paintings, and lastly analyzing the mechanical paintings from the perspective of mechanical drawing.The second chapter is the mechanical painting and its cartographic technique in Qin and Han Dynasties. Mainly introducing and analyzing the mechanical painting described on fresco, stone, brick and lacquered coffin in Qin and Han Dynasties, examining the unearthed similar machines during the same period, comparing the unearthed similar machines and the mechanical paintings, and lastly analyzing the mechanical paintings from the perspective of mechanical drawing.The third chapter is the mechanical painting and its cartographic technique in Sui and Tang Dynasties. Mainly introducing and analyzing the mechanical painting described on fresco and scroll painting in Wei, Jin, Sui and Tang Dynasties, examining the unearthed similar machines during the same period, comparing the unearthed similar machines and the mechanical paintings, and lastly analyzing the mechanical paintings from the perspective of mechanical drawing.The fourth chapter is the mechanical painting and its cartographic technique in Song and Yuan Dynasties. Mainly introducing and analyzing the mechanical painting described on scroll painting in Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, examining the mechanical plans during the same period, comparing the mechanical painting and mechanical plans, and briefly discussing the mechanical drawing in Ming and Qing Dynasties.This article belongs to the history of mechanical drawing, included in the history of engineering drawing or the history of drawing. History of drawing is the rising interdisciplinary. There are many topics needed to be research. For example, chinese mechanical drawing has never been mentioned in the history of western drawing except Needham. So far there is no research on the history of mechanical drawing in the world. So this article is very important for the history of chinese drawing and the history of western drawing.
