For the past few years, population aging gradually exacerbated, much attention has been paid to the urban residency for the aged, and consensus of improving residency environment for the aged has been achieved globally. As population aging has accelerated in China and the elderly population has increased rapidly, the proportion of middle-aged and old people has gradually expanded, especially in some communities constructed for a long time, which has been translated from normal communities to aged communities. For elderly people living in these communities, they prefer to living in familiar environment rather than in nursing homes or elderly apartments. However, these communities are now designed for elderly people and not all their demands could be satisfied. To solve this problem, this research introduced the “aging in place” theory overseas improving the residency environment in these communities. The aim of this research is to satisfy the demand of living in familiar environment from elderly people and improve the lack of facilities for the elders in China simultaneously. This research consists of six sections. The first section introduces the background and challenges of population aging and emphasis that this issue demands prompt solution. This section defines related concepts and puts forward the purpose, significance and methodology of the whole research. The second section analyses related modes and theories to support elderly people both in China and overseas and concludes that aging in place theory based on communities is the ideal development tendency for China. The third section conducts a demand analysis for the “aging in place” theory and elaborates the features of this theory. Then the physiological, physiological and behavioral features of elderly people are shortly analyzed. Next section discusses the principles and methods of the “aging in place” theory. The fifth section presents the application of this theory in old communities to improve residency environment with some examples. The last section summarize the contents of this research and put forward some expectations on aging population problem in the future of China. To provide a safe and comfortable residency environment for elderly people, the current living area should be remodeled properly. Principles and methods in this research could provide some theoretical foundation and practice instruction for the process of remodeling.
