Vessel traffic system is a random dynamic complex system, with the intercoupling among the elements:human, vessel, environment and management. Using simulation technology could build a model and framework including all main factors and specific details, and quantitatively analyze or vividly demonstrate the running process of system. In this paper, a vessel traffic simulation prototype system is proposed, which could transform all dynamic information and static information about vessel traffic to data, and query the special data in accordance with simulation requirement. The prototype system consists of visual module, database module, AIS (Automatic Identification System) trajectory analysis module, traffic flow simulation module, traffic organization module and VTS (Vessel Traffic System) training module. The main thesis works are as follows:1) The research status of vessel traffic simulation and simulation system is summarized, the prototype system is designed based on lots of relevant reference books and field research, and its functions are analyzed in detail from part to whole.2) The database module in prototype system is researched. Taking China maritime information database and TRANSAS VTS database as reference objects and combining the actual requirement of vessel traffic simulation and VTS training, the conceptual model, logical model and physical model of vessel traffic database are built. Meanwhile, the AIS data is taken as data source, and an ETL (Extraction-Transformation-Loading) standard is designed to extract, transform and load AIS data, which aims to ensure the validity and integrity of data.3) The AIS trajectory analysis module in prototype is researched. The importance and application fields of AIS trajectory analysis is summarized. A ship motion recognition algorithm and an AIS trajectory restore algorithm is proposed to analyze characteristics and regulations of vessel traffic. Therefore, statistical parameter of vessel traffic flow is gathered and historical vessel traffic flow is replayed.4) The traffic flow simulation module and traffic organization module in prototype is researched. A random number generation algorithm based on sample analysis and an improved traffic flow simulation algorithm are proposed, by analyzing the procedure and deficiency of traditional vessel traffic simulation method. The simulation vessel traffic flow is in contrast with historical traffic flow and the results show the improved traffic flow simulation algorithm is effective. Meanwhile, the ship schedule optimization result is vividly demonstrated and assessed in the prototype system.5) The VTS training module in prototype system is researched complementally. A generation algorithm of a wide-ranging multi-scale radar simulation data is proposed which is suitable for simulation radar in VTS training module and makes the radar simulation image continuous and accurate. The algorithm had put into use in the Navigation Simulator.
