With the increasing urban population, the city size grows larger and larger, which leads to the uneven distribution of the passenger flow along some urban rail transit lines. If still using single routing, it will cause that some sections are lack of transport capacity, while other sections are flush of that. With the same number of trains, long and short train routing can not only reduce the turnaround time of trains, and then reduce the passengers’total waiting time, but also can reduce the degree of crowding and ensure good service level. So it is very important to study on how to make train routing scheme for urban rail transit scientifically and reasonably. The main work and conclusions of this paper are as follows:(1) This paper analyzes different types of train routings by basic concepts, relative merits, application cases as well as passenger flow’s characteristics. and summarizes influence factors of making train routing planning from the aspects of passengers’ demands, running conditions and operation organization.(2) From the viewpoint of urban rail transit’s public welfare. optimizing model for long and short train routing mode is set which takes short routing’s origin and terminal stations and train frequencies of long and short train routing as decision variables and takes minimizing passengers’total waiting time as objective and considers the number of serviceable trains, section load factor, time interval between two consecutive trains and minimum departure frequency as constraint conditions. The purpose of the optimizing model is to reduce the passengers’total waiting time and the degree of crowding on the train, while remaining the transport company’s benefits. And then in order to compare the effects of long and short train routing mode and single routing, some operation indicators are selected. At last, according to the model characteristics, genetic simulated annealing algorithm is designed to solve the problem.(3) Taking an urban rail transit line of City C as example, obtaining the optimal train routing scheme and verifying the rationality of the model and the effectiveness of the algorithm. Analysis shows that with the same number of serviceable trains, the transport efficiency and running kilometrage of long and short train routing are almost the same with those of single routing. But long and short train routing can reduce passengers’ total waiting time by 3.77%, and the maximum section load factor and the load factor’s proportionality for different sections are optimized greatly. That is to say, long and short train routing can improve passengers’service level greatly under the circumstance that the enterprise costs are fixed.(4) Selecting passenger flow proportion in short-turn sections, upper limit of train load factor, location of turn-back stations and train ratio of long and short train routing as influence factors to do relevant analysis. The condition of setting long and short train routing is acquired, that is, the passenger flow proportion in short-turn sections is about 60%, and achieving some referable suggestions of setting long and short train routing for urban rail transit as well.
