With rapid development of economy, construction waste, tailings waste residue and other waste are increasing and cannot natural degradation. The long-term storage not only took up a lot of land, but also caused serious environmental pollution and ecological damage to soil, rivers, vegetation and atmospheric. It’s an effective measure to convert industrial tailings directly into building materials. The measure can bring significant social benefit, economic benefit and environment benefit, and is essential for social sustainability. Mortise-tenon hollow block is a kind of load-bearing block which is made of industrial tailings waste, construction waste, etc by pressing and steam curing. Mortise-tenon hollow block has many advantages such as recycling, high strength, environmental protection, energy saving. However, the basic mechanical properties of this new type block are uncertain. In order to applicate mortise-tenon hollow block and establish procedures, this paper studied the experimental on basic mechanical properties and theoretical analysis. This paper also presented mortise-tenon block’s mean value. Then the related formulas can be used to reference for design of masonry structure design and the theoretical research. The main research contents of the paper are as follows:(1) According to filling holes rates of 0%,33%,67% and 100%, this paper studied 24 axial compression tests; according to filling holes rates of 0%,25%,50% and 100%, this paper studied 24 shear tests. In the process of these tests, we observe the mechanical behavior of masonry, record cracking load, crack development, the failure load and failure modes.(2) Based on axial compression tests and shear tests, this paper studied the basic mechanical properties of this new kind block. This paper also presented tenon block’s mean value of compression strength formulas and shear strength formulas based on the experiments and the strength formulas of litter block masonry.(3) According to the difference of mortar strength and vertical loading, designed 4 compression-shear tests. And this paper studied the role of tenon construction in masonry shear and the special structure make the shear mechanism are difference from the little block masonry. Based on the experiments, the paper presented tenon block’s mean value of compression-shear strength formulas, and proved that the special structure can increase the shear strength of the tenon block masonry.(4) Experimental mold of compression-shear have been analyzed with FEM ANSYS Workbench. The paper is using the contact elements to simulate bonding effect between block and mortar. Based on the analysis results, the stress, the friction and compressive stress of contact surface, failure load of the masonry have been got. And also compared with experimental results, both are in good agreement, which illustrates the working mechanism of the compression-shear of mortise-tenon hollow block.This paper presented tenon block’s mean value of shear strength formulas and compression-shear strength formulas based on the experiments and the strength formulas of litter block masonry. Then the related formulas can be used to reference for design of masonry structure design and the theoretical research.
