In the modern field of maritime education, the marine engineering simulator has become an important means of marine education and training. Traditional marine engineering simulator is mostly semi-physical simulation or two-dimensional software. So traditional simulation system is abstract and more specialized, and lack of dynamic display when in application. It is difficult to see the true environment of the engine room. Virtual reality technology brought opportunities for the development of marine engineering simulator. This article combined the simulation of mathematical model for ship propulsion system with virtual reality technology, and also make the two-dimensional simulation interface combined with three-dimensional virtual scene, and finally a high quality of three-dimensional virtual engine system come true. The research content is as follows:The simulation model of ship propulsion system was established, including the mathematical model of diesel engine, shaft system, propeller and so on. The model of diesel engine is created on the basis of thermodynamic principle and volumetric method principle which is popular at the aspect of diesel engine modeling with a fast simulation speed, and high precision. The diesel module was established by MATLAB/SIMULINK based on the modular thought. The diesel module was established to simulate the working process of diesel engine, including the cylinder system, the inlet and exhaust system, the central cooler system, the turbocharger system, the governor mechanism system and multi output system and so on. Then according to the propeller characteristic curve established propeller thrust model and ship-engine-propeller matching module.The three-dimensional model is created by 3ds Max software, including diesel engine, shaft, hull, propeller, virtual environment and so on. Using the Unity3D virtual development engine as the platform to design the whole architecture of virtual engine room system, and implement the two-dimensional simulation interface, three-dimensional scene of virtual engine room and data simulation unit. Two-dimensional simulation interface of engine room integrated with structure and operations of ship system. The three-dimensional scene of virtual engine room make the ship picture come true. The data simulation model realize the logical control of virtual engine room and programmed mathematical model. In order to facilitate operation, automatic routing function is realized in the engine.By implementing the communication interaction between virtual engine room and the marine engineering simulator of Dalian Maritime University, this virtual system could work as a separate system for simulation training, and also could work as an additional part for DMS-2011 full-mission training system.
