Radome is one of the key parts of missile, its electrical performance directly affects the missile’s accuracy. After machining, the geometrical shape and size of the radome fit the blueprint. But because of the inhomogeneity of permittivity and error of geometrical thickness, the radome’s electrical thickness can not meet the design requirements. Now in engineering grinding is often used to change the geometrical thickness of the radome and make up its electrical performance. This paper is based on this situation and researches the compensation of the radome’s electrical thickness. The research objectives follow as:Based on analyze of the existing radome grinding techniques, This paper put forward the radome grinding technology based on initiative location and on-machine measurement. That means with the use of initiative location installment fixture, the radome can move accurately and quickly between the IPD measurement device and grinder. At the same time the grinding quantity of the radome can be measured at the grinder.Based on the idea of initiative location, This paper designed the initiative location installment fixture, including initial positioning institution, the workpiece fixture system, location interface of the radome on the IPD measurement and grinder, between which the radome can switch quickly and accurately.Applying laser displacement sensor, This paper designed the on-machine measurement device of radome’s grinding quantity, which includes adjustment mechanism of laser beam, control units and so on.This paper designed in detail the laser beam’s calibration adjustment units, control units of the laser beam’s incidence angel. As well This paper researched the installment methods of the measurement device on machine tools, providing the hardware for the on-machine measurement of the radome’s grinding quantity.This paper worked on the development of on-machine measurement software of radome’s grinding quantity, which includes five parts:planning and calculating of the measurement points, coordinate calculation of movement of the on-machine measurement device, NC the measurement code, collecting and dealing with the measurement dates, updating the database.Finally collimation of on-machine measurement device Laser Beam, the accuracy of on-machine measurement device have been tested. The device is accomplished after debug and experiment,The experimental result proves that the on-machine measurement device meet the measurement requirements of radome’s grinding, and it can provide some technological support for the radome’s accurate grinding.
