Water-based fluid not only meets the requirements of sustainable development, also is a kind of environment-friendly lubricant. However, compared to oil-based lubricating, water-based lubricating liquid has such disadvantages:poor film-forming abilities, low viscosity pressure, poor lubrication and so on. It is necessary to select the good performance additives to improve the tribological properties. In this paper, alcohol ethoxylate ether (AEO) and triethanolamine borate ester (BN) are selected as basic lubricant additives and their tribological properties are studied and analyzed briefly.Firstly, friction and wear properties of two aqueous solutions are studied by MRS-10A four-ball tester and SRV friction wear tester. Stability performances and maximum non-seized load (PB) are taken into consideration. The surface topography of the ball wear scar is analyzed by 3D surface topography instrument. The components of chemical elements on the surface of wear scar are analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicate that the friction-reducing and anti-wear properties of polyether solution have been improved when BN is added, and PB value is increased greatly. Then the rheological properties of AEO and AEO-BN aqueous solutions are studied by the rotational rheometer. The characteristics of Newton’s fluid are taken into consideration, and effect of concentration and temperature on the rheological properties is investigated. The viscosity of AEO and AEO-BN aqueous solutions are compared under the same conditions. The results indicate that the greater the concentration, the greater the viscosity is. When temperatures do not reach the cloud point, the viscosity decreases with temperature increasing.Thirdly, film-forming properties of aqueous solutions are studied by NGY-6 nanoscale film thickness measuring gauge and the lubrication state is analyzed. The results indicate that film thickness of AEO reaches to 38nm with the line speed increasing, while AEO-BN only reaches to 35nm. Both of them are in the process of the thin-film lubrication to the elastohydrodynamic lubrication, and the state they are in is the mixed lubrication. Finally, the anti-rust test of two aqueous is analyzed, and the experimental phenomenon is explained. The results show that AEO aqueous solution has poor anti-rust properties. After joining the BN, rust resistance of mixed solution has been greatly improved. So, BN has a good property of anti-rust.Through the above relevant tests, it can be realized that synergistic effect of AEO and BN in terms of lubrication property is observed. They are also environment-friendly water-based lubricants. It can provide some ideas and theoretical guidance for the follow-up study of water-based lubricant.
