With the continuous development of smart grid, distribution automation system requires more and more powerful power distribution equipment. Lack of a very good scalability and intelligence, some traditional distribution terminal has difficult to meet the needs of modern smart grid.Feeder terminal unit (FTU for short), an essential component of distribution automation system, is responsible for collecting the status of distribution equipment and distribution network, uploading collected real-time data and information to the main power distribution stations, and controlling the open and close operation of power distribution and control equipment. The performance and reliability of FTU impacts the entire distribution automation systems directly. Therefore, designing a FTU with a powerful and stable performance and highly intelligence is a primary task of improving the distribution system automation system.Through investigating the research status at home and abroad, beginning from the overall design of FTU, ARM9 embedded microprocessor 32 9G20 is chosen as the CPU, adopted the methodology of modular design, designed and implemented power supply system, main board, core-board, hardware circuits of collecting(telemetry, remote signaling, remote control) and Input/Output, and box with dust-proof, rain-proof, damp-proof, anti-ageing functions. Software design prefers real-time multitasking method with interruption enabled. For the AC measurement and calculation, we combined the algorithm of root-mean-square and the algorithm of Fourier transformation together, which improves the reliability and anti-interference of the device; added seven procedure design methods, designed and implemented embedded software and host software, analyzed application solution and explained its application in the system as well as Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC for short). Our experiments demonstrated its lower overall power consumption and more powerful, stable performance, and A high resistance to electromagnetic interference and adaptation to more harsh environments are also verified.
