Automotive industry becomes a pillar part in our country. Its rapid development leads to the growth of the national economy. Automobile industry in Shenyang is an important force for national car industry. For auto parts enterprises, it is essential to improve their labor productivity, increase the level of automation, response capability rapidly to increase production and sales in automotive development. Currently, assembly line is almost used in all car companies. Assembly line is a high-efficiency, high-output operation model. It has an extremely important effect on improving assembly quality, assembly efficiency as well as reducing production costs. Therefore, this paper takes bumper assembly line as the research object and carries research on assembly line improvement.In this paper, target on the assembly line balance rate, we get a series of data collection on the bumper assembly site,using stopwatch to make sure the standard time of element, and redistrict process operating element, then establish element priority relationship. With a minimum number of workstation as the target function, genetic algorithm is proposed to improve. We use Matlab to implement algorithm to get the minimum number of workstation and the result of work cell assigned for each station. In order to meet the demand of the whole automobile factory, its assembly line layout, materials distribution methods, and bin are also improved combined with the status of bumper assembly line. The full manual bumper assembly line changes into semi-automated. According to improved bumper assembly line layout, Flexsim software is used in modeling bumper assembly line. To achieve the related functions, code is also required for the design. By running the simulation, we get the result of simulation and statistical charts. Improved assembly line is proven to be feasible, and give advice in further research on increasing bumper assembly line balance rate.
