Application And Research Of Local Materials In Rural Architectures

A village is home to our ancestors who built it with their own hands and wits. It is a traditional living culture and creature of continuous nature lives. We pass down our hometown emotion to a village—our hometown decorated with mountains,waters and landscapes. Local materials are cornerstones to build rural architectures and represented in the rural architectures with their own value charms, exhibiting local regional cultures and expressing the local complex of urban residents to go back to the ecological nature. The rural constructions are made by local architects and villagers with local materials and technology methods in accordance with conditions such as the local daily lives and production, natural ecological environments, aesthetic ideas, folk customs and religious consciousness, thus gathering a large quantity of experience,wisdom and treasures. However, the rapid modern development has brought some negative impact to rural folk architectures and gradually deprived villages of their regional culture. The technology creation and inheritance of local materials in rural architectures haven’t been further developed. The systematicstudy on local materials backgrounded by rural architectures has been extremely limited. The architectural space is lack of extension modes and innovative materials. Therefore, the study of this paper, with Gaoyi Village, Huaihua, as the environmental background for study, starts with the local rural architectures and makes a systematic exploration and explanation on the attributes of the local materials via field visits, instance analyses and theoretical researches, thus exhibiting the value and functions reflected in the emotion expression and space creation of local materials in the rural architectures so as to attract more attention from all the Chinese people.Making analysis from the concept of local materials, this paper first analyzes the characteristic value of the rural architectures in Gaoyi Village so as to extend the materiality,technical functionality, cultural artistry, aesthetic decoration, and further explore and study the technical construction and transformation extensibility of local architectures. It also puts forward the thinking strategies on the application prospect development of the local materials’ ecological sustainability and traditional inheritance.The Gaoyi Village Planning & Reconstruction Design Program is a true tutor’s program which the writer participated in asa graduate student. The writer also makes field visits to make inspective analyses of the rural architectures, local materials,ecology landscapes and culture history. Furthermore, she designs and reconstructs the old houses in the village while perfectly representing the value of local materials by combining the new design concepts. The writer derives some experience from other Chinese rural architectures and rural construction while providing some creation value and prospect development for local materials on rural architectures. The author also analyzes,classifies, integrates and perfects the discussed viewpoints via practical cases.
