Recently, with our country’s continuous development of civilization, the increasing number of urban population has promoted the expansion of city, which leads to the separation of jobs and residential. Improving the track traffic sharing rate can effectively ease traffic congestion. Rail transit through operation can reduce the transferring, which is an important measure to improve the rail transport service level and competitiveness. Therefore, it is significant to study the competitiveness of rail transport under the through operation. At first, the paper analyzes the experience of foreign through operations. Secondly, with the characteristics of through operation, the generalized cost model of traffic mode before and after the through operation was established. On the basis of this, the multiple Logit traffic mode selection model based on the generalized cost theory is established, and the influence of the through operation on the rail transit sharing rate is analyzed quantitatively. Finally, the validity of the model is verified by a case study. The main research contents and conclusions are as follows:(1) The paper analyzes the passenger demand of through operation. The foreign large metropolitan through operation experience is studied, focusing on the through operation’s background, implementation and effect between the Tokyo subway and private railway.(2) Based on the analysis of characteristics of through operations, considering travel cost, travel time, travel reliability, travel congestion and safety factors, generalized cost models of the rail transit, car and bus before and after through operators are given respectively. The multiple Logit traffic mode selection model based on the generalized cost theory is established, and the parameters of the model are calibrated by the maximum likelihood estimation method.(3) The validity of the model is verified by the case. Based on SP survey data results, the model parameters are calibrated. On the basis of this, the resident travel mode choice probabilities were calculated. And the law of the variation of the transfer time, time value and road traffic condition is studied. The results show that the share of passenger flow in rail transit has increased by nearly 30% after the through operation. The longer transit time is, or the higher the time value is, or the worse the road traffic conditions is, the more obvious the effect of the transfer of passenger flow after the through operation will be.
