Middle of last century, the developed countries have established national trails system, in order to solve the contradiction between the growing recreational demand and open spaces. Today, China has entered the age of recreation economy, during the urbanization, there is a large difference between the urban and rural, and the recreational requirements of city residents explosion, in these context, the development of trails solves the many conflicts, such as, rural economy, rural environment, recreational demand. However, the construction of trails in our country is too late, and the research of trails is not a system, the practice is lack of theoretical guidance, in this paper I studied the trails from the concept of trails, to provide guidance and reference for theoretical research and practical application.Trail is a linear open space primarily for recreation purpose and has a variety of functions and values. It can be described from the factors of shape, users, construction, dimensions, functions and values; categorized in three ways they are nature, surface and function; classified in four ways they are scale, development, function and difficulty; the principles of integrity, ecology and people-oriented should be followed, the regional resources and market conditions should be considered, and the overall objective should be the first consideration when trails are planned and designed. The paper take Sancha village as a case study base on the trail classification and the principles of trail planning and design, and point out 8 trails on the basis of status quo investigation of natural resources and cultural landscape characteristics. The paper analyze the landscape features along the trail from the landscape characters, ecology, culture and in terms of Sancha forest landscape, and then eight trails are pointed out, which have highly potential to develop trail tourism, the results demonstrate all of the 8 trails have high scores in characters, ecology and culture:Trail 1 have the richest landscape types and the strongest comprehensive performance; the theme of history and culture stand out along trail 2, trail 4 and trail 8, but trail 8 is not suitable for the trail development because of the terrain and ecology; T.mandschurica forest landscape stand out along trail 3 and trail 5;the Economic forest landscape of chestnut forest and wild apricot forest are stand out along trail 6 and trail 7. After investigation and tourists’ characteristics analysis of Sancha, we find that tourists prefer day trip of hiking, climbing, science, and touring, and we should do a good job of activating historic villages and wild Great Wall protection when planning trails. According to the landscape features along the trails and the result of tourism market analysis, the planning objectives of Sancha trails system are "Origin, Exploration, Appreciation, Inheritance", they respectively represent the functions of "History search ", "Forest walk","Historic Villages visitation", and "Ecological production", and then the trail system is separated into six types of hiking trail, climbing trail, science trail, historic villages trail, touring trail and eco-production trail. The final planning results is that:trails 1-- hiking trail, trails 2-- climbing trail, trail 3--science trail, trail 4-- historic villages trail, trails 5--touring trail, trail 6 and trail 7--Eco-production Trail.
