With the increasing density of the land development in the vicinity of intersections, and the accesses roads soaring, the safety and efficiency issues within road traffic are spreading into intersection upstream and downstream. It has been reported that with the increase of intersection management and perfection of control measures, accident rates in the intersection areas are descending along the years, however the accident rates in the vicinity of intersections are picking up. To maintain the safety and efficiency in the vicinity of intersections, this paper conducted research on there.First of all, the land development patterns and the vehicle motion characteristics in intersection vicinities were researched. And the definition of intersection vicinity was given, that is the stop line of each approach in the intersection as a starting point, major arterials or major collectors along the intersection upstream or downstream stretches 400 meters, minor arterials or minor collectors along the intersection upstream or downstream stretches 300 meters, if the signalized intersection existing in the extended distance then stop the signal intersection, the area covered by connecting extended terminal point was defined the vicinity of intersections; And a new way classification of intersections according to the form of intersection vicinity was given.Secondly, considering the access location of intersection vicinity, this paper analyzed the influencing factors of access location layout of intersection vicinity, among which the impact of utilization of land within intersection vicinity is discussed in detail, along with other influencing factors such as road grade, traffic characteristics, driver characteristics. And the principle of access location layout in intersection vicinities was given. Then access location layout patterns can be used to intersection vicinity like frontage roads, service road and shared access was given.At last, this paper developed a spacing model to study the intersection functional areas in a quantitative view, and an analysis of corner clearance was given, and corresponding values under specified traffic conditions were given. The access spacing in the intersection influence area was studied mainly through the space modeling, and corresponding values under specified traffic conditions were given. The relationship between access spacing and the road capacity was thoroughly analyzed and the shorter access spacing the bigger impact on the road capacity was proved on quantitatively studied.
