The power system consists of four scattered segments__ electricity generation, electricity transmission, electricity transformation and electricity distribution, and the simultaneousness of these steps characterizes the electric power industry. As the professional and dedicated communication network, the power system communication network is indispensible to the whole system. This network, which offers several services such as power monitoring, dispatching automation, relay protection and power market, and bears information of different forms like data, image, voice, is the foundation of automation of power dispatching and modernization of power market management. It satisfies the specific demands of high efficiency and high capacity of communication transmission in the power industry, and guarantees the security, stability and high quality of power generation. Furthermore, the network has been developing along with the ever-changing demands of the power system.This paper, first of all, analyzes the networking features and advantages of the current communication network and OTN network technology respectively. In the light of the status quo and the demands of current communication network, this paper studies and analyzes MSTP/SDH networks and OTN network, and conducts a comparative study on their networking modes. After that, this study applies these different networking modes to a real project of the communication network to make analysis and comparison, and then selects a networking program that best fits the project, so as to accomplish an integrated design of both current communication network and OTN network. This design constructs a new type of communication network that fits both the development demands and the status quo of the communication network for the power system. This design is not only technically feasible and cost-saving, but also of significance to the power system builders in taking full advantage of existing transmission equipment and ring network resources, reducing the investment on data equipment, enhancing the clarity and increasing the utilization rate of cable resources, etc.Finally, this study analyzes the development prospect of the combination of existing communication network with ONT network by a real project design.
