Magnetorheological (MR) buffer is a naval buffer device developed with rheological properties of MR fluid, and shows a certain application prospect in the aerospace field. Based on MR buffer with high reliability used in lunar probe system and the design theory of the MR buffer, this paper proposes a mixed mode MR buffer with a single pole.To obtain step increasing coulomb damping force, the inner cylinder of the MR buffer is designed and divided into two parts, one is magnetic cylinder, the other nonmagnetic cylinder. According to the design idea "work constant force", under the impact condition, the alternating magnetic and nonmagnetic cylinder can obtain an approximate constant force with the help of the viscous damping force affected by piston velocity and the coulomb damping force affect by the magnetic circuit changing with the piston displacement. The MR buffer is supplied with a constant current by the DC power, and work without the complex control module, so the MR damper has the advantages of simple structure and high stability.According to the theory analysis of fluid mechanics and finite element analysis of magnetic field, based on the technical requirements, the 1/4 scale principle prototype of MR buffer is designed in this paper. The MR buffer with the optimal model parameters is designed, manufactured and assembled.Considering of the application environment of MR buffer, experiments are carried out to study the damping performance of MR buffer. The electronic universal testing machine is used to analyze the static performance of MR buffer, and it is known that the static load bearing capacity is greater than 1.83 kN. Impact test platform is developed to study the shock response performance, and experiments show that the MR buffer shows a good damping performance.
