Water Featur Landscape Ecological Design In Chengdu’s Ancient Towns’ Renewal Analysis

Chengdu plain has become well-known for its rivers. The history could be retrospected from "Yu fighting with the Great Flood" which has benefited all future generations on this land. From that time, many towns were formed by the sides of rivers and are remained until now. Chengdu’s geographical and humanity characteristics have contributed to the unique lifestyle in those ancient towns.In recent years, along with the repaid urbanization process, ancient towns have been known and further developed. Their unique natural humanities resources and culture have attracted numerous visitor and scholars. However, because of the tourist industry boom, many ancient towns have been polluted and damaged to a certain extend. It is resulted in a lack of scientific theoretical guidance. Apparently, it is a profound topic to analyze how ancient towns can be renewed while the damage level can be reduced to a minimum.Water feature landscape, as an essential element of ancient towns, is also an indispensable and significant part of Chengdu’s ancient town. In the process of ancient town renewal, ecological landscape design for water feature has a role of improving humanistic environment, as well as protecting the nature environment.This report will discuss the current situation of foreign and domestic water feature landscape design, the development background of Chengdu’s ancient towns, and foreign and domestic case studies and methods on water feature landscape design. Firstly, the current situation and problems on water feature landscape design in Chengdu’s ancient towns were picked out through multiple site visits and relevant theoretical literatures. Secondly, drawing discussions from above, further analyze how water feature in Chengdu’s ancient towns can be improved through ecological landscape design.The report will mainly focus on (based on foreign and domestic theory and practice of water feature landscape design):1) Understanding the importance of water feature landscape in ancient town renewal and categorized them through their different characteristics and surrounding environment.2) Summarizing ecological landscape design methods for water feature and how they can be implemented in Chengdu’s ancient towns.
