With the rapid development of residential construction and the increasing maturity of the real estate industry, people’s demand for residential construction is more and more high. The special shaped column residential structure system has been widely used because of its indoor non exposed beams, columns and so on. However, due to the lack of seismic data, many problems still need to be discussed, so the seismic performance is still under question, therefore, it is necessary to study the seismic behavior of the special shaped column structure and its components.In this paper, the finite element model of special shaped column frame structure and rectangular column frame structure have been established by using ANSYS finite element software, and the comparative study of seismic analysis of two kinds of structural models have been carried out. The main research contents as follows:(1) According to the principle of equal area into rectangular column section. In the condition of the same area, the structure analysis software ANSYS as a tool, the establishment of two models of frame structure with special-shaped columns and rectangular column frame structure, using dynamic time history analysis method of comparative analysis of the two model under frequent earthquake and rare case under the action of earthquake seismic response.(2) The effect of limb width ratio on seismic behavior of frame structures with special-shaped columns is studied by comparing the effect of limb width ratio on the seismic behavior of special-shaped columns. On this basis, the energy dissipation characteristics of special shaped column frame structures under rare earthquake are studied.The results of the study indicate that: under frequent and rare earthquake, the floor displacement of the frame structure with special-shaped columns and the interlayer displacement angle was smaller than that of the rectangular column frame structure, the seismic acceleration response and internal force of the structure both have little difference; broad limb special-shaped column frame structure seismic performance comparison has certain influence, when limb width ratio is close to the better aseismic performance. For the future engineering design to provide a certain reference value.
