With the development of the urbanization, frame structures with special-shaped columns are used in residential buildings for their advantages. Due to the restriction of axial compression ratio and partition wall thickness, the designers have to enlarge the width of the special-shaped column cross section to improve the structure resistance. It is defined as wide limb special-shaped column when the width-thickness ratio of the cross section exceeds 4, which exceeds the restriction of the Technical Code. There are a few research results at home and abroad with wide limb special-shaped columns and the majority is at the stage of exploration. In this paper, firstly, L-shaped section columns with equiaxial and inequiaxial sections are calculated with elastic finite element method in ANSYS under suitable stress-strain curve and numerical model. According to the normal strain contour lines under the different width-thickness ratio and height-width ratio etc., the influence factors of the deformation feature of wide limb special-shaped columns are studied. The deformation characteristics of the column with equiaxial and inequiaxial sections are compared.Secondly, L-shaped section columns with equiaxial and inequiaxial sections are calculated with nonlinear analysis in ANSYS. The failure feature is discussed on the basis of the crack propagation and distribution. Finally, a frame structure with L-shaped width limb columns, which width-thickness ratio is 4.5, is calculated. The deformation feature is studied according to the normal strain contour lines of columns in the structure. The deformation, natural vibration period and modal of the structure are also discussed. The results show that the height-width ratio is the main effect factor on the deformation feature of wide limb special-shaped columns. It can be deduced that the deformation feature of the multi-story build, which the height of floor is 2.8~3.2 meter, is mainly bending-shear or shear deformation.
