At the beginning of China’s reform and opening,both China’s political and economic environment meliorated a lot. Western culture was imported and the field of architecture was brisk. As an important economic city, Wuxi is the industrial center and transportation hub of Jiangsu Province. A large number of unique public buildings emerged in Wuxi during this period. The construction of these public buildings witnessed China’s changes from the stagnation of the cultural revolution period to its reform and opening. Although this period is short, it has distinct characteristics. However, with the rapid development of urban construction in recent years, many excellent public buildings are destroyed, some even removed. The existing situation is worrying. Through systematic carding for their characteristics, this dissertation tries to provide some theoretical and practical reference for the protection, repair and re-use of these architectural heritage.This dissertation takes Wuxi public buildings that built at the beginning of China’s reform and opening as the research object, based on the literature data collection and the analysis of the field research, carding the general situation of those buildings. At the same time, research methods such as example analysis, induction and deduction analysis are used during the research. On the material level, the dissertation researches on these buildings’ style,modelling and architectural technology for a more precise positioning. On the nonphysical level, the dissertation explores these buildings’ construction background, causes and cultural connotation, which can guide the contemporary architectural practice.The dissertation consists of four chapters. The first chapter mainly defines the research object and researches on the summary of the related study, making sure of its significance and content. The second chapter discusses general overview of the construction background,development history, distribution and existing situation of those public buildings. The third chapter researches on these buildings’ evolution and their characteristics from style,modelling and architectural technology, summarizing the trend that those characteristics reflected. The fourth chapter summarizes the causes of characteristics that Wuxi public buildings built at the beginning of China’s reform and opening reflected.
