New lamps such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps are replacing incandescent lamps gradually all over the world because of their great advantages. Compared with incandescent lamps, these new lamps possess much advantages, such as energy saving, high luminous efficiency and long lifetime. With the penetration rate of CFLs and LED lamps increase, the properties of these lamps attract widespread attention. In this paper, the power quality disturbances characteristic and sensitivity characteristic of CFLs and LED lamps are analyzed. The main contents of this paper are shown as follows.(1) The power quality disturbance of CFLs and LED lamps are mainly reflected in the large amount of harmonic current. First the reason of the harmonic is analyzed on the basis of the analysis of circuit structures of CFLs and LED lamps. And the IEC standard concerning harmonic emission limits for lighting equipment is introduced. Then the experiment system is built and the harmonic emission characteristic of single lamp and lamps used in combination is tested. Four aspects of active power, waveforms, harmonic distortion and power factor are analyzed. During the comparison with IEC standard, it is noticed that the existing IEC standard focused on gas discharged lamp is not suitable for LED lamps and recommendation to the problem is proposed.(2) Research on effect of voltage sags on CFLs and LED lamps is carried out. First the effect of voltage on CFLs and LED lamps is analyzed and then the experiment system is built, and the changes of illuminance of incandescent lamp, CFLs and LED lamps is tested and compared where the incandescent lamp is used as the reference. Studies show that all three types of lamps are effected by voltage sags. Under the same voltage sags, the illuminance of incandescent lamp shows the highest decrease and the longest time to return to normal. Although CFLs and LED lamps are superior to incandescent lamp in these aspects, they also produce significant lighting changes and show high sensitivity to voltage sags.(3) Research on the illuminance fluctuation of CFLs and LED lamps under interharmonics is carried out. First the effect of frequency and amplitude of interharmonics on the RMS and peak voltage. Then the illuminance fluctuation of different types of lamps under various interharmonics are tested and compared. It is discovered that the incandescent lamps are more sensitive to low-frequency interharmonics than CFLs and LED lamps and that CFLs and LED lamps are sensitive to interharmonics of all frequency and the fluctuation depth of which is higher than incandescent lamp. Overall, the illuminance fluctuation of CFLs and LED lamps is rather high under interharmonics.
