The Research Of The External Space Of Museum Using Space Syntax

Since the reform and open-up policy, China has achieved great achievements on urbanization. Behind the rich material form of the city, people are also looking for a spiritual home. As an important part of the city culture, museum culture has enriched the public cultural life as well as enhancing the cultural quality of the city. As time changing, the museum is not only the research institutions for experts and scholars, but also a window for citizens to understand city culture. This change has naturally changed the spatial structure, establishment of facilities and behavior guidance of the museum. Meanwhile, it must be certain that as the material carrier of museum culture as well as important public space in the city, the construction of the museum should not be blind and deserved the attention of designers. Projects which have been finished should be summed up to help build targeted design theory.In past studies, researches tend to take qualitative analysis methods to study the characteristics of the museums’ out space, such as environmental influence on visitors, visitors’ behavior characteristics and needs. Such studies are relatively strong subjectivity. In this thesis, based on the understanding of space syntax theory and field research on the exterior space of the museum, the quantitative analysis thoughts and methods have been established. Through unscrambling main parameter values of spatial structure properties, the paper analyzes the external spatial configuration of museum buildings. Then, combined with the author’s research results on the exterior space of the museum building, better spatial configuration on spatial permeability and spatial guidance can be gotten, which will be a reference standard for space evaluation to help architects make more rational and accurate design creation on the external space design of museums. Meanwhile, research on the external space configuration of museum buildings in this paper has expanded the application of space syntax theory in the field of architecture, which reflects the wide applicability of space syntax and is another development on the theoretical system.
