Wheel as an important part of the train, in train running process it will produce abrasions, stripping even rim crack damage. These damages will directly affect the train operation safety. At present, the detection of the wheel mainly rely on the people with hand to carry out, the operation is complex and the accuracy is low. Therefore, the research and design of a set of automatic testing system for train wheels has become a special concern in the industry. In this paper, the application of ultrasonic nondestructive testing technology in the automatic detection of the train wheel has been studied systematically, and on this basis, a multi wheel train wheel automatic testing system has been designed.Based on the principle of ultrasonic detection as the theoretical basis, the system plan is designed according to the research target in this paper. Paper presents an array scan examination technique. The probe array mod ule consists of multiple probe and encoder and etc.The system scan the wheel rim and tread part from all angles with the probe array module. Considering the high-speed acquisition and upload a large number of real-time data, an architecture consists of FPGA and PowerPC dual cooperative processing is presented in this paper and been used in the data acquisition module. FGPA complete the work of high-speed data acquisition, digital filtering and data compression while PowerPC complete the work of the communication with operation control display module.Operation control display module use IPC as display platform, using Lab VIEW as software platform to realize the operation, control and management of the system, testing data processing and analysis and result display. Based on the characteristics of LabVIEW, a graphical programming language, author design the system operation and control management software. According to the functional requirements of testing system of high speed data processing, the detection results of real-time display and data storage management, this paper designed the corresponding interface and the program module. The paper propose a method of changing drawing resolution to optimized image display processing. This method improves the efficiency and real-time of the system.This paper further studies the ultrasonic positioning and imaging technology, then presents a method of B-Type display combining with C-Type display also combining with A-Type display to show results. It uses B-Type display to reflect the location of defects in the depth direction, and C-Type display to reflect defects position in the cross-section, then check the defect information through A-Type display, combining with the three can determine the exact location of defects on wheels.This paper gives the design method and design of the main modules of the system, completed the manufacture and debugging of the system, and field test is carried out.
