Road traffic environment is an important part of the traffic system, and it is also one of the important factors that affect the driver’s driving condition. For the driver, the correct understanding of the road traffic environment is of great significance for their own driving behavior. In this paper, according to the characteristics of road traffic environment, the environmental factors are divided into effective and ineffective factors, and the research of road traffic environment is performed.In this paper, based on the theory of complexity, the paper makes a further study on the complex system, and considers that the road traffic environment has the basic characteristics of complex systems, and can be used for the analysis of road traffic environment with the theory of complexity. According to the development of the complexity theory in the field of airspace traffic environment, the viewpoint of applying the complexity to evaluating the road traffic environment is proposed, and the factors that influence the road traffic environment complexity are collectively referred to as the road traffic environment complexity factors. In order to simplify the traffic environment, the road traffic environment is abstracted into a number of road traffic relationship units. Each unit consists of two components of the driver’s vehicle and the road traffic environment complexity factor. And the complexity of road traffic environment is determined by the role of each road traffic relationship unit. In order to quantitatively describe the complexity of road traffic environment, and the abstract relationship unit of the road traffic environment is about the relationship between two factors, the paper proposes the basic form of gravity model to describe the road traffic environment complexity, and a mathematical model based on the gravity model to describe road traffic environment complexity concept mathematical expression is established.In order to make an objective understanding of the impact of environmental complexity on the driver, based on the virtual simulation platform and the complexity theory of environment, the paper designs 5 driving scenarios in different complexity in the virtual driving environment, and measures the reaction time of the driver in different scenes by the measurement of peripheral detection task, which is a kind of sub task measurement. The results show that the processing of other tasks in the high complexity environment will be delayed, the performance of the reaction time is prolonged, and the driver’s status will also become unstable. And the reaction time is reasonable to be used as a parameter of the complexity degree of road traffic environment.
