Urban outdoor living space is the main place for outdoor activities including outdoor recreation, relax, passing through, etc. Urban environmental pollution, urban heat island effect, the increase of extreme weather are becoming the challenges of demand of outdoor comfort. There are plenty of researches of climate adaptation from urban physical environment, urban climatology, physiology and many other fields. However, from the perspective of design, there is a lack of planning and design theory, which can provide guidance of design practice.The purpose of this paper is to summarize the results of the research on urban outdoor activity space design from the perspective of landscape microclimate adaptation. From the coupling relationship among urban landscape microclimate system function, space form, human comfort, the basic concepts are summarized, the core problems are summed up, the research contexts are combined, the research framework is established. Then, the author points out the promising explore directions, providing convenient conditions to carry out the follow-up research work.This paper is composed of five chapters. The first chapter is introduction. In this chapter, the topic origin and research background is elaborated; the purpose and significance of outdoor activity space climate adaptive design is put forward; the main contents including of three key factors of urban landscape microcliamte research and related problems are proposed. Based on the analysis of the core issues, a complete research framework is put forward.In the second chapter the research foundation is dicussed. In this part, the basic concepts are defined that the components of urban landscape microclimate andmicroclimate effects, the spatial elements and the spatial structure, and the comfort sense from the human body. The climatic classification methods used in the study are also studied. Besides, the methods of climate classification for landscape microclimate adaptation design were put forward. Summarized the current research content and representative research team, scholars, and summarized the framework of the disciplines related to landscape microclimate research.The third chapter expresses the mechanism and regulation of landscape microclimate system. Through introducing the literature selection method, the research results are briefly understood from the quantity and field distribution of the research results. From the research foundation of components of urban landscape microclimate and microclimate effects, research development of urban landscape microclimate system mechanism, combing the research results, and constitutes the theoretical foundation for urban landscape microclimate system characteristics and principle analysis.The fourth chapter talks about the evaluation of human comfort in urban landscape. Through the statement of database selection, a general understanding of the relevant research areas is formed. Furthermore, from three aspects that research context, the evaluation method and the physiological model, the research results of the urban built environment human comfort evaluation are studied. Finally, express the research results of human comfort evaluation of outdoor environment, including the method of outdoor human comfort evaluation and the actual case study.In the fifth chapter, the study on the climate adaptive design of the typical urban outdoor activity space unit is summrised. Firstly, based on the results of literature research, this paper tries to put forward a framework for the design of urban outdoor activity space climate adaptability. A brief analysis is made on the case of the representative city street and the square climate adaptability design.
