Rubber tyred roller is one of compacting machines, which compacts statically the layer material though its own weight and the special rubber tyre. In recent years, hydraulic tyred roller has been getting more and more attention and application attributed to high performance of surface compaction with the continuous improvement of construction quality requirements, especially in the improvement of surface quality requirement. Experiments present that there are common low engine power use and high fuel consumption because of the large power differences between starts/stops transition and stable compaction process. Hybrid energy-saving technology is employed on tyred roller to address the above problems, aiming at improving dynamic characteristics of the system and realizing energy saving and environmental protection.Theoretical analysis, experimental research and simulation analysis methods are used to capture dynamic characteristics of roller in the process of starts/stops based on research object of 26 t rubber tyred roller. For tyred roller, the energy required in the starting stage is greater than recyclable energy in the braking stage and the energy difference is relatively stable. Hydraulic accumulator can be used for recovery of braking energy to compensate the energy required in the starting stage so that the engine can work in the high-efficiency area. According to working characteristics of tyred roller, a suitable parallel hydraulic hybrid system for tyred roller is selected.The design principle of hydraulic hybrid system is proposed and the matching methods of main components are concluded considering the load and energy characteristics to achieve high working efficiency and low cost. The system control strategy achieving better fuel economy and driving performance is put forward after analyzing roller’s working characteristics and hydraulic hybrid system’s operating modes. The critical modes of hybrid system-regenerative braking mode and mixed driving mode are analyzed, and the secondary unit’s displacement control method suitable for load change is summed up.Simulation with AMESim for the hydraulic walking system is carried out and effectively verified by comparing analytical simulation and experimental results. According to the mathematical models of systems, the hydraulic hybrid system model is built up. Simulation analysis results prove that hydraulic hybrid system is feasible for rubber tyred roller, 18% fuel economy improvement can be achieved in the speed of 7 km/h.
