Small ornithopter(Flapping-wing Aircraft) is a complex electromechanical system, which obtains the flying capacity by imitation of flapping-wing flight creatures. Study of small ornithopter has a unique bionic idea, depends on the union of multidisciplinary research and innovation. This paper focuses on several issues around ornithopter.The paper reviews the historical background and development process of small ornithopter, gives a more comprehensive discussion of the basic features, applications and scientific value, shows the key points of the small ornithopter research, indicates the direction and content.Bionic is a prerequisite for the design of ornithopter, the paper does the biology and statistic analysis for geometric characteristics and physical parameters of flying creatures, gives the factors which influencing the flapping-wing flight. Builds a similar normalization equation for each parameter associated, provides reference values for the subsequent design.Researches for flapping-wing aerodynamic characteristics is to explore the principles of flapping-wing flight. Starting with the revelation of how the birds get high-lift power by flapping-wings, the paper analyzes the existing flapping-wing aerodynamic model, finds the insufficient and then introduces the flexible flapping-wing model to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics, and verifies the model by comparing the existing data.Driving mechanism of flapping-wing is an important part of building a small ornithopter. This paper analyzes the structure of biological wings, combines with the existing structure, and builds a system of a single-input, two drive gear symmetrical output structure. Uses the computer technology for the digital model building and optimization analysis, and then verifies the bionic capabilities of the institution.Control system is the brain of ornithopter. The research studies and summarizes the characteristics of small ornithopter control system, introduces the Gur Game control strategy, a self-optimizing and self-organizing control system, according to its characteristics, and then use the closed-loop simulation for verification.Finally, the paper gives the specific methods for digital prototype and physical prototype technology of small ornithopter, by combining the actual research experience, provides references for future research.
